InventHelp's Annual Blood Drive Hits Close to Home

For the sixth consecutive year, InventHelp® was a group contributor to Central Blood Bank's annual blood drive. The two partnered to gather in-house blood donations and lend their time and energy to help improve the blood bank's reserve.

In business for nearly 25 years, the InventHelp corporate offices are housed in downtown Pittsburgh with affiliates and employ approximately 150 people. This year, 20 percent of InventHelp employees donated blood, and many of the participants had one special little boy in mind when they showed up to donate.

Connor Behr, the son of an InventHelp employee, Kimberly Behr, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) on September 18, 2008. Since his diagnosis, Connor has had to undergo many procedures, including blood transfusions, and the Behr family is thankful to those who are willing to donate lifesaving blood. "There are so many people out there that benefit from blood donations, which is why we are so thankful to the InventHelp employees for taking part in the annual blood drive," said Kimberly Behr. "Our son is just one of many who rely on blood transfusions to stay well."

To prepare for the arrival of Central Blood Bank technicians, InventHelp recruits team leaders from different departments within the organization. The leaders are charged with the task of encouraging and motivating people to sign up to give blood in the weeks leading up to the blood drive. By the time the day of the drive rolls around, InventHelp already has a list of employees with assigned times to give blood. And, of course, walk-ins are welcome, too. Returning team leader Susan Rich said knowing Connor motivated her to work even harder this year to recruit participants. "I always volunteer for the InventHelp blood drive, but this year, I knew how important it was to get as many people involved as we could," said Rich.

Established in 1951, Central Blood Bank is a Pittsburgh-based not-for-profit organization providing blood products and related transfusion services to more than 40 hospitals in Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Crawford, Lawrence, Mercer, Venango, Washington and Westmoreland counties in Pennsylvania, as well as selected communities in northern West Virginia and eastern Ohio.

Several other InventHelp employees know firsthand the importance of blood donations. When longtime InventHelp employee Livia Bebing was diagnosed with myelodysplasia several years ago, she needed blood transfusions on a regular basis. Over the course of four years, she received nearly 200 transfusions before treatments helped put her in remission.

"The Blood Bank says, 'Donating Blood Saves Lives,' and that could not be more true," says Bebing. "A lot of people wouldn't be here if no one gave blood. Whenever we needed it, it was there and we couldn't be more thankful to those who gave their time. That donation always makes a big difference."

Stories like Connor and Livia's, as well as those of friends and family members, inspire InventHelp employees to participate in the company's annual blood drive with Central Blood Bank.
