Contests Reward Inventors for Oil Spill Cleanup Inventions

On April 20, 2010, a wellhead on the Deepwater Horizon oil drilling platform blew out in the Gulf of Mexico. Since that day, approximately 137.6 million gallons of oil have been released into the Gulf of Mexico, making it the largest offshore oil spill in U.S. history. This has left many people wondering what lingering ecological effects the spill will leave.

A variety of efforts to stop, contain and clean up the oil have been attempted, but none have been completely effective. If you have an invention idea that could help the oil spill, now is your chance to act. There are several invention contests and programs that award prizes to the most innovative ideas on how to clean up the oil disaster.

The InnoCentive Challenge is awarding the winner a prize up to $1 million. To qualify, an invention must be identified and described to help prevent further damage caused by the explosion and ongoing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Get full details of the challenge on the InnoCentive website.

BP Oil Spill inventionsThe X Prize Foundation announced that it is developing a multimillion-dollar "oil spill cleanup X challenge." It is asking people to think up smart solutions to clean up shorelines and open water affected by the BP oil spill. The contest has a nice incentive: a $10 million prize to the winner.

If you have an idea or invention to help the BP oil spill, you can also submit it to the FedBizzOps Deepwater Horizon Response. Once the idea is received, the IATAP and RDC will review it to determine if it is technically possible, effective and deployable. Although this does not have a prize, your contribution may have a great impact on this dire situation.

These opportunities enable inventors to use their creativity to help the environment. Not only will the selected invention ideas potentially help this oil spill, but they could help in future situations as well.
