Kids (ages 5-19) across the country are being asked by the contest organizers to recycle, reuse and re-engineer everyday materials into new inventions. 25 finalists will be featured on the Design Squad Web site and the top 3 inventors will win a trip to Boston where their designs will be built and chronicled for an upcoming episode of the engineering TV series.

Trash 2 Treasure CompetitionThe rules are simple and state that the invention should fit within one of the three categories: move things or people (Mobility), protect the environment (Environmental), or be used for indoor or outdoor play (Play). The invention must also include at least two repurposed materials (such as fabric, paper, plastic, small electronics, wheels, clamps, springs, batteries, hardware, wood, bike parts, string, rubber bands, cardboard, kitchen gadgets, etc.) Online tools will be available to the competitors to sketch out their ideas or upload photos, which allow competitors an opportunity to enter the contest without first building their invention.

The winner of the 2009 contest, twelve year old Max Wallck, won the grand prize for his “Home Dome” invention, which is largely made from discarded plastic and provides temporary shelter to the homeless and victims of natural disasters.

The following video link shows Max building a full-scale version of the Home Dome at Continuum: pbskids.org.

The contest deadline is September 5th and registration and other information can be found at www.pbskids.org/designsquad.

We are pleased to see programs like these. No recession can last to long when the state of inventive minds is alive and healthy in the U.S.
