Sealed Air Corporation, the creator of Bubble Wrap, is sponsoring the Bubble Wrap Competition for Young Inventors to encourage students in grades 5–8 to demonstrate ingenuity by creating an invention that incorporates the use of Bubble Wrap cushioning. Three finalists will be treated to a three-day trip to New York City, during which the Grand Prize winner will be announced on January 26, 2009 – also known as Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day. The Grand Prize inventor will receive a $10,000 savings bond to put toward future innovations or education expenses.
Like many great inventions, Bubble Wrap was originally developed with another purpose in mind – textured wallpaper! Inventors Alfred Fielding and Marc Chavannes quickly realized the invention's potential as a cushioning agent and went on to found the Sealed Air Corporation in 1960. Thanks to their innovative thinking, countless glass trinkets, framed photos and other delicate goods have managed to make it to their respective destinations protected and break-free.
Now, Bubble Wrap needs the next generation of young inventors to create a new invention with Bubble Wrap as the central theme.
Here are the details on how to become a National Semi-Finalist:
