Prizes for the contest will be awarded in a "traditional" category (which includes all types of inventions and innovations, except appliances and appliance components) and a "green" category. Ideas submitted to the "green" category must minimize impact on environmental resources, use recycled/natural materials, or be in some way environmentally friendly. Each mom inventor can submit up to three ideas for consideration, and Whirlpool states that submitted ideas remain sole property of the contestants.
The Overall Grand Prize winner of the invention contest will receive a $20,000 grant, along with various Whirlpool appliances and a stipend for a new home office. Additionally, First and Second Prize winners in each category will receive $7,000 and $5,000 grants and whirlpool appliances. This year's judges include a pair of famous mom entrepreneurs: Julie Aigner-Clark and Lori Pope. Aigner-Clark is the creator of Baby Einstein, while Pope established BabyPlays, an innovative toy rental program.
Interested mom inventors can enter online or print a form to mail from the Whirlpool Web site. But act fast, moms – the deadline for entry into the Whirlpool Brand Mother of Invention Grant contest is July 31, 2008. Winners will be notified in early September.
