Every exhibitor at INPEX has the opportunity to participate in the INPEX International Invention Awards Program. Entries are judged by an international jury, with winners determined based on the invention's usefulness, creativity and overall appeal.
This year's Grand Prix winner was inventor Ferdinando Cona, of Brooklyn, N.Y. Mr. Cona invented the Portable Carpentry Workshop – an all-in-one workshop that would require no set-up or dismantling for a table saw, miter saw and router. The inventor knows from his days on the job that setting up and dismantling the tools needed for the day eats up valuable time. This all-in-one rolling cart would feature essentials like a work light and a fold-out table for drawings. To use, an individual simply rolls the cart onto the jobsite, plugs the included plug and power strip into an outlet and gets to work. When finished, the cart can be rolled into a garage or other storage space.
Mr. Cona takes home $7,500 in prize money that may be used toward the development of his invention. In addition to the Grand Prix award, the PCW was awarded the Gold medal in Construction.
The INPEX 2008 first runner-up was Chua Kek Heng from Malaysia for his invention, DiagnoCARD – a medical mutation/variation screening system. The invention also won a number of other INPEX awards, including a special award for Best Invention of the Pacific Rim and three gold medals (in the science, medical and biology categories). Mr. Heng received $3,000 for his efforts.
This year's second runner-up was Mitch Marcovici, whose ScrewMaster™ invention also won the Gold medal in Gadgets and the Silver medal in Hardware/Tools, as well as the Best Invention of the Americas special award. Mr. Marcovici developed his invention because he was tired of battling with inadequate tools. And as perhaps the spryest 84-year-old you're likely to meet, Mr. Marcovici decided to do something about it. The ScrewMaster could double or quadruple the speed of fastening or loosening a screw or nut, while applying the same torque. This creates less strain on the body while saving time on the job. Mr. Marcovici took home $2,000 in prize money for his invention.

INPEX is a unique trade show that includes more than 1,000 inventions from the U.S. and all over the world. Companies like Everlast®, Bosch, Irwin® Tools, Tupperware, Hasbro, and Full Life™ Products, LLC conducted product searches at INPEX this year, many of them returning for the second or third time.
According to Trade Show Director Nicole Hait, "INPEX is an open house for open innovation. Organizations big and small are embracing the concept that in today's competitive environment, they cannot afford to rely entirely on their own R & D but must consider buying or licensing inventions from outside."
