Mother's Day is celebrated in many different parts of the world, and its origins are rooted in a variety of cultures. Mothering Sunday, also called "Mothers' Day" in the United Kingdom and Ireland, falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent. Historians believe that the tradition originated in the 16th century. Once a year, Christians would voyage to their "mother church," which meant that most mothers would be reunited with their children on that day of the year. The U.S. version of Mother's Day was loosely inspired by its British counterpart; however, its history is also teemed in anti-war and labor-safety activism.
If you can sense a hint of revolutionary in your mom (did she, for example, go on an "anti-laundry" strike until you kids learned how to pick up your socks?), then glitzy, gaudy jewelry just won't do the trick. For an eco-chic mama, an organic cotton robe can help her wake up on the right side of the bed. While organic farming is not a new invention, the proliferation of organic clothing is a pretty new phenomenon. The concept involves reusing scrap fabrics to reduce waste, as well as growing, harvesting and transporting new cotton crops in a way that is not harmful to the environment.
Another fun invention to help Mom relax is the PajamaGram. PajamaGram.com is a sister company to The Vermont Teddy Bear Company, which has been in the business of making and reliably delivering personalized Teddy Bears since 1981. Everyone loves to get things in the mail, so why not a pair of cozy pajamas? Luxurious, soft PJs are delivered in a reusable, keepsake organza hat box with a lavender-scented sachet, gift card, and Do Not Disturb sign. Another company, WildBleu.com, has invented a new kind of PJ that wicks moisture away from the skin during night sweats or hot flashes. Featuring Heat Release Technology™ (HRT) developed from years of working with endurance athletes, this fabric pulls moisture from your body and then evaporates the moisture better than traditional fabrics.
