2006 was certainly an interesting year in the inventing world. In case you haven't heard, the best invention this year was: You! That's right, You (by way of YouTube) which beat out medical breakthroughs, pioneering technology and gadgets galore.

YouTube, the Web site that is making stars out of the Average Joe and Jane, allows users to upload personal home videos and watch videos of others. Some of the most popular videos this year included the Diet Coke/Mentos experiment, which results in a geyser-like effect when the two products are mixed. Perhaps you were even among the thousands who undoubtedly tried this at home!
Wondering what other inventions made the list for the year 2006?
While it is certainly entertaining to watch other people, the animal kingdom had a major breakthrough last year. If you're like many people, the idea of being in the same room with a
cat is tantamount to torture. Your eyes burn, your nose runs, and you come close to setting a record for consecutive sneezes. Your worries could be over with a recently invented
hypoallergenic cat!
This genetically engineered feline lacks the proteins that cause those horrible allergic outbreaks. The first kittens are expected to be born in early 2007, and the company, Allerca, is already accepting deposits from allergy-suffering cat lovers.
And if you plan to get a new kitty this year, you'll certainly need a pet bed. How about one that floats? A Dutch architect has invented a bed that "floats" on magnets. When the magnets repel each other, it suspends the bed in mid-air. A pet-sized model starts at about $146,000, while a bed to sleep a person would run a cool $1.5 million.
If that price tag seems a little steep, perhaps you can cut corners a bit by using some of that leftover Halloween candy as fuel for your car! It sounds strange, but a company called Xenathol has invented a process by which confectionary such as stale butterscotch candy can be distilled into a gasoline additive called ethanol. When scientists mix the candy with a special form of yeast, fermentation results, forming ethanol. Oil companies mix the ethanol with unleaded gasoline to reduce gas cost and pollution.
With hypoallergenic cats, floating beds and cars running on candy, 2006 may seem like a tough year to beat. But, InventHelp® is sure that with all the creative, hardworking inventors out there, 2007 could be even better!
